Cat medicine is important to overall health of your cat, but try convincing him of that!

If you are a cat owner sooner of later you will need to use cat medicine. Like people, cats get sick and cat medicine will some times need to be administered in order to maintain good cat health.

Administering this cat medicine isn't always that easy. Most of the time cat medicine will come in the form of a pill. This can be quite tricky to get a finicky eater like a cat to swallow.

The method I use to administer solid cat medication is to crush the pill into powder and mix it into a generous portion of canned cat food. Most of the time this works but not always. Obviously cat medicine only works when your cat actually takes it.

When your cat refuses the powder pill method then you need to take a more active approach. Gently hold your cat by the back of the head and open its mouth with the opposite hand. With your fingers place the pill in your cats mouth on the back of its tongue. This will trigger a swallowing response and will almost certainly ensure your cat gets its medication.

There are also tools you can use to place the pill onto the back of your cats tongue if you can't get your fingers back far enough.

Administering Liquid Cat medicine

If the cat medicine is in liquid form it is much easier to administer then a solid pill. I don't try the "hide in food" method with liquid cat medication simply because my cat sniffs it out immediately.

When you get the liquid medication you usually get a syringe also (if you don't ask for one). The syringe has a series of measurements which make it easy to dispense the right amount.

Holding your cat in the same manner as with a pill, gently ease the syringe into the corner of your cats mouth. Slowly dispense the cat medicine into the back of your cats mouth.

As with everything else, try not to distress your cat much. Of course your cat won't like it regardless but if your cat is sick then the medication needs to be given and a bit of discomfort must be tolerated.

If you have more questions about cat medicine and how they can be administered contact your vet.
